What does a Pharmacy Technician do?

A Pharmacy Technician's job is to help licensed pharmacists provide medication, and other health care products, to patients. Technicians will usually perform routine tasks to help prepare prescribed medication for patients such as counting tablets and labeling bottles. Technicians will refer any patient questions regarding prescriptions, drug information, or health matters to a licenced pharmacist.

Pharmacy Technicians receive written prescriptions or requests for prescription refills from patients. They may also receive prescriptions sent from the doctors office. They must first verify that the provided information on the prescription is complete and accurate. To prepare the prescription, technicians retrieve, count, pour, weigh, measure and sometimes mix the medication. Then, they prepare the prescription labels and select the type of prescription container while affixing the proper label. Technicians may also establish and maintain patient profiles, stock and take inventory of prescription and over-the-counter medications and prepare claim forms

In hospital settings, Pharmacy Technicians may read patient charts and/or prepare and deliver medicine to patients.  A Pharmacy Technicians responsibilities may be greater or lesser that those listed above depending upon the location in which they are practicing.
