The Right Skills The Billing & Coding Associate diploma program prepares students for successful employment as a clinical coding specialist in a physician or group practice. Training includes: Processing and submission of insurance claims forms Making payment determinations and calculations Performing financial duties associated with physician' practice operations (e.g. Patient Accounting) Demonstrating an understanding of coding classification systems (ICD-9, ICD-10, CPT) Applying proper clinical codes to represent procedures and diagnoses accurately for appropriate reimbursement by insurers Demonstrating and understanding of medical terminology, pathology, and body structure and function Verifying patient insurance information Reconciling 'dirty claims' for resubmission to the appropriate third party Proper use and application of coding supplements including CPT Assistant and 3M Coder The Important Accreditations and Approvals Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools Certified by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia Extensive Hands-On Clinical Experience Students will begin their clinical education requirements during the third quarter of study. One day per week students will be assigned to a clinical site to complete their requirements for clinical internship. Additional clinical education hours are required for the externship requirement following the successful completion of all on campus coursework. Students will be placed in a physician or group physician practice during the clinical education component of their program. No High School Diploma or GED Required - Learn More Students under 18 years of age must have the signature of a parent or guardian Students must acheive a passing score on the admissions evaluation Clinical coursework includes: Patient Account Management, Medical Billing, Clinical Coding (ICD-9, ICD-10, CPT), Claims Processing/Reconciliation, Computer Productivity and related Applications; Use of Source Documents and Supplemental Resources Clinical Education: Required Clinical Intership and Externship Theory coursework includes: Medical Terminology, Body Structure and Function, Pharmacology, Health Insurance, Pathology, Structure and Content of Medical Data, Healthcare Delivery Systems, Law and Ethics Professional Foundations coursework includes: Computer Basics and Keyboarding, Job Search and Interviewing Strategies Get Your Credentials Graduates with a GED or High School Diploma will be immediately eligible for the following national certification exams: NCICS - National Certified Insurance and Coding Specialist (National Center for Competency Testing) Get Started In A Growth Industry Graduates of the program will be prepared for an entry level position as a clinical coder, medical biller, or claims examiner/processor. Employment will be found in physician' practices, outpatient clinics, urgent care facilities, and/or insurance companies.
